My foundation in making art is that the most honest point of expression is a self taught “folk” based approach, because it’s void of the pretensions that come with so much of the general education that is indoctrinated through art education. Having been raised with both folk art and classic portraits in my family’s home, some that are over 150 years old, as well as an interest in modern art, created a desire to mix everything I know as well as the simple curiosity of “what would happen if…” into paintings that rarely repeat themselves and wanting to find and master the next way of expression in my own personal way.

I want to paint and express every feeling, thought and inspiration that comes to me. In my view life is a complex interweaving of infinite thoughts and feelings that sometimes clash, sometimes harmonize and sometimes fall flat, but when we look at it all in a certain way there is always beauty to be found, even if it takes change within us to get to it. The various subject and styles that I use are a spiritual approach to that.

The challenge to move forward out of a comfort zone (or a not so comfortable zone) often involves so much letting go of fear and expectancy, but it is what inspires me to change so often and to look for so much “new” in my paintings. I don’t want repetition, nor slight variations on previous works, I want to see how far I can go in creating a language that I have never heard before yet sounds intuitively cohesive if you give it the time. I do not want to have my life and expression hinged on something as trivial as style or popularity when I am painting something new. I have no interest in imitating other artists, if I see an idea that I like I will take it, but my work is entirely my own and does not give homage to anything but my love of creativity. It is an inner dialog with creativity itself!

Each painting is an interaction with ideas and my evolving perception of them. I've had experiences, thoughts and feelings profound to my life that I can never entirely touch upon in expression to someone else; but that is part of living- a connected yet singular experience where we search for truth and love in our own way and then try to relate to each other through experience. My art is my voice speaking to whomever wishes to listen and connect.
